Robert Bartleh Cummings was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts to his parents. While growing up he quickly developed an appreciation of horror films. Later he studied art at college before going on to work as a bike messenger, porn magazine artist, and production assistant.

He then formed the rock band White Zombie in 1985 and had several major hits before eventually disbanding the group to pursue solo work. His debut album Hellbilly Deluxe was released in 1998 and peaked at number five on Billboard 200 chart; two years later came Sinister Urge, his sophomore release.
