Lavigne was raised in a devout Christian family and began singing at church choirs, local festivals, and county fairs at age 16. At 16, she signed a record deal with Arista Records that sent her to Manhattan where she collaborated with top songwriters and producers.

By the time Lavigne released her debut album Let Go in 2002, it had already become an instantaneous success across four charts: Canada, U.S.A, Australia and U.K. Her subsequent eponymous releases Under My Skin (2004), The Best Damn Thing (2007) and Goodbye Lullaby (2011) further solidified her popularity. Rage Against the Machine brought vibrant protest music into modern times. Their songs voiced strong criticism against corporate America, cultural imperialism and government oppression.

Rage Against the Machine’s explosive debut in 1991 brought with them a fiery blend of metal, punk, and hip-hop music that fed into Gen X’s collective anxiety and vented it outward. Channeling influences like Led Zeppelin (riffs), Public Enemy (polemics), and MC5 (dynamics), Zack de la Rocha, Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk unleashed an audacious call to revolution.

Killing in the Name and Evil Empire were powerful anthems to combat corporate greed, racist police brutality and the right-wing radio dial. Their 1999 album The Battle of Los Angeles included “Testify,” which took aim at government control over citizen lives; even Jimi Hendrix used that chord on “Purple Haze.” Today “Testify” remains relevant. It can be listed as one of the songs about hating.

GAYLE is quickly making waves in music. Discovered by former American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi and music publisher, she has released several singles such as “dumbass,” “z,” and “happy for you,” plus most recently an abecedarian breakup song entitled “abcdefu.”

While GAYLE may appear like just another angry rock princess, she manages to be quite authentic in her lyrics and her song is both clever and humorous, touching directly upon those negative emotions associated with being dumped by a partner. This is a striking example for the songs about hating.

Jacksonville, Florida-based band Blink-182 became widely-renowned for their raw, vulgar and controversial approach to music with Fred Durst’s harsh vocal delivery, drummer John Otto’s aggressive drumming and bassist Sam Rivers’ experimental bass soundscapes. However, despite these controversial elements the group managed to appeal to a broad audience and remain loved today with its signature sense of humor and self-deprecation* still intact.
