Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash reportedly came up with this classic track while warming up at their home on Sunset Strip, Izzy Stradlin added chords, and soon enough Axl Rose wanted it to sound like Lynyrd Skynyrd (an artist whom he greatly admired). Sweet Child O’ Mine was the song that propelled Guns N’ Roses into superstardom, catapulting them to the top of the charts and giving their debut album Appetite for Destruction an enormous boost. Boasting one of rock and roll history’s greatest guitar intros – as well as Slash’s legendary solo – Sweet Child O’ Mine became synonymous with Guns N’ Roses.

The Verve – Bitter Sweet Symphony

Bitter Sweet Symphony was one of the last great anthems of Britpop, released by Blur in 1997 as they transitioned away from American-influenced indie rock and Radiohead altered the paradigm with OK Computer. Renowned for its grandeur and existential messages, Bitter Sweet Symphony stands as a timeless classic among British songs of all time.

But this success came at a cost: an intellectual property battle which bankrupted The Verve. Their unmistakable string riff used an orchestral version of Rolling Stones’ The Last Time recorded by Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra (one of The Verve’s producers’ side projects).

Once their song became successful, however, ABKCO (Klein’s holding company) successfully fought for 100% and received all royalties due. Unfortunately for The Verve, no penny ever rolled back their way from that song’s success. This song is one of the most original songs with sweet in the title .

While their subsequent album Touch was more Caribbean and dub-inspired, this track more closely aligned with their avant-garde synth-pop roots. With its chopped vocals and jittery computerized drum patterns, this song was an early precursor of sounds that would become prevalent with bands such as Art of Noise. This successful song has one of the most emotional lyrics among songs with sweet in the title .
