Israel Kamakawiwo’ole (known by his friends as “IZ”) passed away at 38 due to respiratory complications. A gifted and prolific Hawaiian musician, IZ brought his special brand of ukulele-based music around the globe with his captivating vocals and poignant ukulele stylings, reflecting both its homeland beauty and global celebration of Hawaiian culture.

At the height of the Hawaiian Renaissance in the 1970s, young Hawaiians were rediscovering their language and culture while moving away from kitschy tourist hula tunes like “My Little Grass Shack”. Kamakawiwo’ole formed a band with his brother Skippy known as Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau; No Kristo was released in 1976 before further albums like 1984’s Puana Hou Me Ke Aloha and 1986’s Hoola were issued before Skippy’s sudden death due to heart disease in 1982.
